The Division of Pediatric
Nephrology at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Physician Assistant to function as a member of the pediatric nephrology
team. The team currently consists of 10 providers, 2 nurse practitioners, 1 dietitian and 2 registered nurses. This position will be
responsible for delivering professional care to patients in an inpatient setting. As part of the patient care team, this position is
responsible for providing optimal patient care through effective clinical practice; education of the patient, patient’s family, clinical
staff, and others; consultation with other healthcare providers; and maintain current knowledge regarding options for optimal patient care
and outcomes.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions

  1. Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by
    performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
  2. Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient’s
    condition.
  3. Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
  4. Orders, interprets, and evaluates
    diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.
  5. Initiates and/or recommends medical
    drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
  6. Assists
    with delivery of CRRT, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and plasmapheresis.
  7. Assists with completion of kidney biopsies and
    admission for observation.
  8. Assists with the ordering of and observation during medication infusions.
  9. Complies with medical
    records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal
    documents.
  10. Participates in quality improvement activities.
  11. Counsels patients, families and significant others about health
    and illness, and promotes health maintenance.
  12. Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring
    emergency measures.
  13. Conducts and/or coordinates education to increase the knowledge of patient, patient family, and others.
    Provides appropriate instruction based on patient needs to support the continuum of care.
  14. Provides general nephrology and dialysis
    care in the outpatient setting, including urgent outpatient consults or clinic visits.
  15. Stays abreast of current trends in
    healthcare practice and participate in continuing medical education to ensure optimal clinical knowledge and effective patient care
    skill.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Office environment.Often:

conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or

Minimum Qualifications
Required:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant
    from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The
    eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Preferred:

  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be
    required by your department or by privileging criteria.

Work Schedule Summary: 4 10-hour shifts, including weekends and some holidays. 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. Scheduling is self-managed
and coordinated collaboratively between the two inpatient nurses, without fixed or assigned workdays. Attendance at division meetings,
educational series, and clinical meetings is expected as required, generally occurring on Wednesday and Friday
afternoons.
