General Description

This position has oversight and responsibilities in the coffee shop and cafe operations. This role involves not only ensuring the preparation of high-quality coffee beverages and food but also assisting in the oversight of a team of baristas, cashiers, and student workers. Ensuring exceptional customer service, managing inventory, reconciling cash and maintaining a clean and organized workspace are all essential aspects of the position.

Minimum Education/Experience

Minimum (1) year work experience as a barista, cashier or in a similar role, with a demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a team.

Minimum (1) year work experience with cash handling, cash reconciliation, and daily reporting of sales metrics.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge:

Knowledge of onboarding new employees.

Knowledge of coffee brewing techniques and beverage preparation methods

Familiarity with operating cash registers or POS systems and handling cash transactions

Knowledge of food safety regulations and standards

Knowledge of food preparation and service techniques

Familiarity with inventory management software or systems

Familiarity with conflict resolution and team building, time management techniques

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Light work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 25 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the OCCC coffee shop, cafeteria and campus.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to administration, faculty, staff, students, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently repeat the same movements.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Use their hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.

This position requires the person to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

This position frequently deals with cash handling, the balancing of registers, and creating of daily deposits.

This position performs the essential functions in an indoor coffee shop and cafeteria. This position must strictly comply with HACCP systems and complete associated paperwork properly for due diligence.

This position exists to assist in the dining services operations in guest facing positions and may include tasks not specifically mentioned above.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing in a cafeteria, coffee shop, catering environment.

Prior experience with training staff and/or staff development.

Experience working in a cafe or coffee shop environment within a college or educational institution.

Required Training

Quarterly compliance training as assigned by institution.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday. 40-hour work week covering operational hours for the cafe and coffee shop as needed. Schedule will vary to meet department needs. Operational hours will vary between 6am and 6pm.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

Lead, instruct, and check the work of part-time Cashiers, Baristas including Food Service Workers and student workers in customer service, food & beverage preparation, stocking, cleaning and other cafe duties.

Maintain and role model a positive, calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events.

Create seasonal and or weekly specials and market accordingly in a creative manner utilizing the blackboard.

Prepare and serve quality food and beverage products consistently for all customers.

Deliver friendly, prompt service; engage with and educate customers about coffee-related topics.

Keep food and beverage display areas attractive, properly identified and priced.

Operate point of sale systems, keying in sales, taking payments and making change.

Follow operational policies and procedures for cash handling and safety and security.

Troubleshoot equipment issues with espresso machine, grinder, and other related equipment.

Complete order/inventory sheets to ensure adequate supply of items necessary for operation.

Receive ordered materials, check purchase receipts and invoices; return damaged goods.

Store merchandise received and rotate stock in refrigerators, freezers or storage rooms.

Maintain a clean and organized workspace; close down and set up facility for next shifts.

Frequently positions self to lift items or boxes/bins of product from floor or low shelving or placing items on low shelving for preparing or cooking food.

Assist other areas of Dining Services as needed including banquet events.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
