Job Summary

This position serves as an actor for nursing simulations.
The Standardized Patient (SP) is a trained individual who portrays a patient or a patient’s family member to support student learning in the undergraduate nursing program’s simulations. SPs aid in the realism of simulations, allowing students to practice communication skills, practical skills, and assessment skills in a safe and controlled environment. This role may also involve providing structured feedback to learners and participating in simulation-based evaluations. Training will be provided.

Essential Job Duties

  • Attend orientation and complete initial and ongoing training
  • Support application of standards-based nursing practice and maintain International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards for simulation
  • Review case/scenario information in advance to adequately prepare for the simulation
  • Accurately portray assigned patient roles, including medical history, emotional state, and physical symptoms
  • Maintain simulation lab environment and ensure effective and efficient use of supplies/equipment
  • Follow infection control guidelines
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with nursing faculty and simulation staff to ensure effective learning experiences
  • Comply with simulation lab policies
  • Maintain consistency in role performance across multiple student encounters
  • Provide contrastive, objective feedback to students when required
  • Complete evaluation tools or checklists as directed by the NSLD (Nursing Simulation Lab Director)
  • Maintain confidentiality of student performance and program materials
  • Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled simulation sessions
  • Maintain timesheet according to the payroll policy
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Flexible schedule that meets the program needs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior acting experience
  • Prior experience as a standardized patient
  • Background in healthcare, education, or customer service
  • Basic understanding of health interactions and terminology
  • Experience providing feedback or evaluation
  • Familiarity with simulation-based learning environments

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to consistently and realistically portray a variety of patient roles
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to remain objective and provide constructive feedback
  • Comfort discussing health-related topics
  • Adaptability in dynamic learning environments
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Physical Demands

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Additional Demands

Must have the ability to sit, stand, squat and lay flat.

Hours of Work

Varies, dependent upon schedule of courses in the simulation lab.
Approximately 10 hours per week.
