Job Description:
The Barnes Center at the Arch at Syracuse University offers an integrated approach to

The Medical Assistant position is 12 months and will
report to the Assistant Nurse Manager. The Medical Assistant will perform laboratory responsibilities under the direction of the Medical
Director, Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, including specimen collection and processing, routine quality control testing,
performance of CLIA-waived testing and documentation of results into EMR. This position
will assist with general clinical patient care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice as defined by New York State law, under the
direction of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Physician.
Education and
Experience:
- HS diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year experience as a Medical Office Assistant
preferred. - Phlebotomy experience preferred.
- CPR certification required.
- Qualified
candidates include certified Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist or Certified Nurses Aide, EMT. - Willing to
complete non-certified medical assistant on the job training.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong organizational,
multitasking, problem solving and prioritizing skills. - Effective communication.
- Typing skills.
- Knowledge of
electronic health records preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Support providers and nursing staff: Rooming patients,
collecting vital signs and information regarding patient health status, coordinate care (phone calls, appointment changes), documenting
clinical interactions in patient chart (EMR), providing patient education materials. - Assist providers with
procedures. - Clean and sterilize instruments for clinical procedures.
- Perform the defined laboratory functions: phlebotomy,
handling of specimens (including use of centrifuge), CLIA-waived laboratory testing, Quality Controls,
trouble-shooting analyzers, documentation of test results, specimen tracking with outside laboratory, scanning of faxed results into
electronic health records, stocking of laboratory supplies. - Communicate with reference laboratory and navigate the reference
laboratory website. - Manage medical waste for disposal.
- Cleaning of all laboratory surfaces per protocol and
manufacturer. - Obtain referral information from the clinician for referrals to community resources: specialty care, mental health,
radiology facilities, etc. - Verify insurance coverage and obtain prior authorization as necessary.
- Coordinate the appointment
with the specialist/facility and send pertinent records. - Arrange for transportation and any special needs as
indicated. - Document all pertinent information in the referral form and keep ordering clinician apprised.
- Assist Managers
with special projects and other duties as assigned.
