Job Description
The ETSU College of Nursing, Office of Practice invites applications for a PRN/Temporary Patient Care Representative for our Johnson City Community Health Center in Johnson City, TN.
The Patient Care Representative supports clinic operations by managing patient records, handling financial transactions, and maintaining accurate data and filing systems.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
- Handling of confidential medical records.
- Bookkeeping and other financial transactions.
- Handling money.
- Collecting data and drafting summaries or reports.
- Maintaining filing system.
- Answering phone calls and assisting with phone requests and information.
- Ordering and maintaining of office and clinic inventory supplies.
- Data entry and calculations.
- Assists Practice Administrator and other professional staff with correspondence and record-keeping.
- Facilitates communication between a limited English proficiency patient and the provider and staff.
- Assists with department with on-the-job training and mentoring of new employees.
- Utilizes online computer systems such as Outlook and other hospital software.
- Works on special projects as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
This is a temporary position working 15-22.5 hours per week.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of business English, punctuation and spelling.
- Ability to make mathematical computations.
- Ability to use computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets and databases in Windows environment.
- Ability to use standard office equipment.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to work with diverse employees and patients.

- Ability to project positive attitude about the health center, and offers services to ensure positive experience;
- Ability to work as a team with colleagues and providers;
- Ability to address concerns raised during or after an encounter by encouraging provider to make appropriate referral and/or assisting with making of appointment with right resource and booking interpreter as needed.
Organizational skills:
- Ability to work well under pressure to manage stressful situations;
- Ability to be flexible to meet scheduling needs and handle often unpredictable changes;
- Ability to use sound judgment and confidence;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks;
- Ability to be detail-oriented and accurate.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of clerical, administrative, and/or customer service work experience. Relevant part-time and/pr student worker experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
- Two (2) years of experience in a healthcare environment.
- Interest in working with underinsured and unhoused community members.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and balance. The employee may occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move more than 100 pounds. The employee must be able to perceive and respond to sounds and alarms; communicate effectively with others; and have a sufficient vision regarding near, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception as well as the ability to observe and monitor situations in full and dimmed light. The employee may stand, walk, and/or sit in various settings for up to 7.5 hours at a time in addition to the preparation and closure of a clinical shift. Rapid mobility may also be required on occasion. Physical expectations of an assigned clinical facility may vary and be subject to change.
Stress levels may be high due to frequently dealing with numerous students, patients, family members, and other healthcare providers. This position demands concentration and the ability to work in emotionally-charged situations.
Compensation & Benefits

- Hourly Rate: $16.70
