Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Advanced Practice Nurse for the department of Head and Neck Surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Provides the overall supervision of Advanced Practice Providers to ensure communication, clinical expectations, collaborate with management for adequate coverage. Work with APP team to ensure competence and identify and implement any necessary education to improve patient care. Touch base with physicians to ensure APP team is meeting expectations to support patient care. Ensure team complies with all necessary regulatory guidelines and policies. Functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective delivery of patient care. The Supervising APN supervises, educates, and mentors Department of Head and Neck Advanced Practice Providers. Duties include covering RWJMS faculty sites by providing patient care. The Supervising APN also provides coverage plans for all types of leave for APP. The Supervising APN acts as a clinical resource to troubleshoot events or issues as well as provides triaging of new patients as needed. Monitors efficiency and effectiveness of APP workflows and clinical documentation.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Collaborates and provides guidance to Head and Neck leadership on clinical matters related to the APP team.
  • Works with Department leadership to monitor APPs productivity.
  • Reviews and set priorities for workload distribution, including office practice, hospital needs and operating room coverage, communicate with practice management to ensure ongoing communication.
  • Operational Workflow, collaborate with clinical leadership to optimize scheduling, coverage and workload distribution.
  • Assists office staff with clinical patient questions, and preauthorization of specific tests/procedures that require peer to peer review or additional clinical context.
  • Provides mentorship for Head and Neck APPs.
  • Assists in development of onboarding schedule for new APPs.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist in the State of New Jersey which requires a Master’s Degree unless grandfathered by the State of New Jersey.
  • At least five (5) years of nursing experience is required including at least two (2) years as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory/managerial experience is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: Standing for long period of time, lifting objects of 10 lbs, must be able to multitask and respond to matrixed reporting structure.
  • Work Environment: Face pace office based practice and tertiary care hospital setting.
