Position Summary: The Vice President of Support Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance of all support service functions throughout the organization. This executive leadership role oversees Facilities Management, Plant Operations, Environmental Services, Biomedical Engineering, Emergency Preparedness, Safety, and Building Security operations to ensure a safe, efficient, compliant, and patient-centered environment of care. The Vice President of Support Services serves as the organization’s Safety Officer and works collaboratively with executive leadership, clinical departments, regulatory agencies, contractors, and external partners to maintain operational excellence and compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards. The role is responsible for developing and implementing departmental goals, operational and capital budgets, preventative maintenance programs, infrastructure planning, and emergency management initiatives. This position reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer and works closely with hospital leadership, Stony Brook University Hospital Facilities Management, and construction teams.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

Leadership and Strategic Oversight

  • Provides executive leadership and operational oversight for Facilities Management, Plant Operations, Environmental Services, Biomedical Engineering, Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Building Security.
  • Develops departmental strategic plans, operational objectives, and performance improvement initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Leads and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and customer service excellence.
  • Mentors, coaches, and develops management staff and departmental personnel.
  • Establishes departmental policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Oversees staffing models, scheduling, workload distribution, and succession planning initiatives.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and supports employee engagement and professional development.

Facilities Operations and Maintenance

  • Directs the maintenance, repair, and operation of all hospital buildings, grounds, utilities, and infrastructure systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and life safety systems.
  • Oversees preventative maintenance programs and ensures timely completion of work orders and repair activities.
  • Coordinates construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Maintains inventory and operational readiness of maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Ensures efficient and cost-effective facility operations with a focus on energy management and sustainability.
  • Oversees vendor selection processes including RFP development, bid review, contract negotiations, and vendor performance management.

Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness

  • Serves as the organization’s Safety Officer and chairs or leads the Physical Environment Committee.
  • Oversees hospital-wide safety programs, including fire safety, occupational safety, accident prevention, and Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM).
  • Provides executive oversight for building security operations, including access control systems, visitor management, security screening processes, surveillance systems, and coordination of security personnel and contracted security services.
  • Collaborates with leadership and external agencies regarding emergency preparedness, disaster response planning, and active shooter preparedness initiatives.
  • Ensures all safety and security programs comply with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Leads risk mitigation strategies related to the environment of care and physical plant operations.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards including The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and local fire and building codes.
  • Establishes work permitting standards and contractor compliance processes.
  • Coordinates regulatory surveys, inspections, audits, and corrective action plans.
  • Maintains documentation and reporting related to safety, facilities, and environmental compliance.

Financial and Administrative Management

  • Develops and manages departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitors expenditures and identifies opportunities for operational efficiency and cost containment.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, and operational analyses for executive leadership.
  • Evaluates capital equipment needs and infrastructure investments.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborates effectively with clinical and non-clinical leadership to support operational needs and patient care initiatives.
  • Communicates effectively with employees, leadership, contractors, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Promotes a collaborative and service-oriented work environment across all support service functions.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering, Facilities Management, Healthcare Administration, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital/educational facilities management or healthcare support services.
  • Experience overseeing hospital/educational facilities operations, safety programs, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a healthcare/educational environment with strong operational, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare/educational facilities management, plant operations, safety, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, NYSDOH, NFPA, and related regulatory requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, project management, and team development skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in budget development, financial management, and operational planning.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness and incident command operations.

Preferred experience and qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment.
  • Experience managing construction projects, contractors, and capital improvement initiatives.
  • Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) training.
  • Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) certification.
  • Additional certifications related to boiler operations, refrigeration systems, or healthcare facilities operations.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move throughout the facility and access mechanical spaces, rooftops, ladders, and stairways as necessary.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift, and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. or materials as needed.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations on-site and after hours.
  • Ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
