Job Description
Job Summary
Responsible for providing routine and specialized histology services in support of the clinical, research, and educational missions of the Department and College of Medicine. This position receives, accession, verifies, processes, embeds, sections, stains, and prepares tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and research applications. The Histotechnician operates and maintains histology laboratory equipment; performs routine, special, immunohistochemical, and frozen section staining procedures; maintains accurate specimen labeling and documentation; and ensures compliance with quality control standards, laboratory safety requirements, regulatory guidelines, and institutional policies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures, tissue processing techniques, and operation of automated tissue processors and related laboratory equipment
- Knowledge of immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), and digital pathology systems and platforms
- Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology and digital imaging equipment
- Ability to research, develop, and implement new laboratory techniques, procedures, and staining methods
- Strong organizational, analytical, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
- Ability to maintain accurate records, documentation, and laboratory data in accordance with quality and regulatory standards
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, researchers, clinicians, and laboratory staff
- Ability to maintain attention to detail while working in a fast-paced laboratory environment
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Histotechnology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field , and a minimum of one year of histology laboratory experience and eligibility for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- ASCP certification
