The College of Business at Black Hills State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Business Analytics/Operations Management beginning August 2026.

Black Hills State University is a teaching-focused institution located in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the scenic Black Hills region. The College of Business is accredited by AACSB International – a distinction held by fewer than 6% of business schools worldwide – and serves approximately 400 students across campuses in Spearfish and Rapid City. The college offers undergraduate programs in Business Administration with specializations including accounting, agribusiness/ranch management, business analytics, economics, finance, entrepreneurial studies, health services administration, human resource management, management, and marketing, as well as an MBA in applied management.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, student-centered faculty committed to teaching excellence, applied scholarship, and community engagement. Our faculty combine scholarly engagement with commitment to student success, connect classroom instruction to professional practice, and involve students in applied or experiential learning. Effective communication, collaboration, and enthusiasm for student mentorship are central to our culture.

The successful candidate will serve as a leader in the college’s recently approved Business Analytics specialization, contributing to curriculum development, program coordination, and the continued growth of analytics instruction within the College of Business. Teaching responsibilities will include quantitative and analytics courses at the undergraduate level, with opportunities to contribute to the MBA program.

DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS: * Teach quantitative and analytics courses at the undergraduate and MBA level, including courses in our new Business Analytics Specialization, Business Statistics, Business Statistics II, Quantitative Decision Analysis, Analytics, Production/Operations Management, and MBA Quantitative Methods.
* The standard teaching load is four courses per semester (4-4), aligned with our mission as a teaching-focused institution. Opportunities for summer teaching may also be available.
* Provide leadership in the development and coordination of the Business Analytics specialization, including curriculum development, assessment, and program growth.
* Engage in appropriate research and scholarly activities consistent with AACSB accreditation standards.
* Maintain Scholarly Academic (SA) qualification through ongoing peer-reviewed research.
* Participate in student advising, recruitment, and retention activities.
* Participate in service activities at the college and university levels.
* Teach face-to-face, online, and at our extension campus in Rapid City.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Ph.D. or DBA in Business Analytics, Operations Management, Management Science, Statistics, Economics, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
* Doctoral candidates who are ABD and near graduation will be considered.

  • Degree completion must occur no later than one year after the initial start date of the contract. The initial contract will be a term contract at the instructor level, $4,000 lower than the terminal degree compensation. Upon successful degree completion, the following year’s contract will include a $4,000 salary increase and assistant professor rank reflecting degree completion. Upon request, one-year prior service may be applied toward promotion and tenure, with BHSU and BOR approval.

-Candidates have qualifications consistent with achieving and/or maintaining AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) status; early-career candidates should show an active research pipeline, while candidates more than five years post-PhD must show recent peer-reviewed scholarship.
