Job Summary
The House Supervisor is responsible for assisting in the organization and administration of clinical services to ensure competent patient care delivery. This position directs and supervises all hospital activities in the absence of the department manager and assists in coordinating the placement of nursing personnel on all units to ensure safe quality care with maximum utilization of personnel skills.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Ensure patients have adequate care coverage by coordinating staffing, while monitoring the flow of patients in and out of the hospital.
- Manage personnel effectively and analyzes workload and skill requirement to meet care needs for assigned shift.
- Maintain a physical presence within the patient care areas, making daily patient rounds, and responding to requests for assistance and guidance.
- Manage employee injuries and sick calls.
- Manage visitors at times.
- Perform some or all the following activities: training employees; employee development; mentoring; counseling; performance valuations; handling employee complaints and grievances; and discipline.
- Facilitate a cooperative team effort among all staff.
- Participate in quality improvement and may participate in department and/or institutional committees.
- During the day shift, the house supervisor works in collaboration with department directors. At night and off shift/holidays, house supervisors also take on an administrative role.
- Work with managers to ensure staff meet basic competencies.
- Ensure staff assigned to specific patient care areas meet basic competencies as outlined by specific departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes on the patient care units.
- Enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of patient care.
- Expected to respond to every code called at the hospital. Ensure we’ve got adequate people that can handle the situation. At times delegate tasks, depending on the code. Set up staffing for code response, which means at the end of each shift, house supervisors assign staff to respond to codes for the next shift.
- Communicating with patients, nurses, other healthcare professionals, family members, and visitors.
- Ensuring quality healthcare for all patients.
- Guiding and advising nursing staff with clinical instructions.
- Supervising and supporting nursing staff.
- Reporting nursing activity to senior management.
- Communicating updated information to departments and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education/Experience
- Nursing program completion (Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN)).Bachelors of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Five (5) years acute nursing experience.
Preferred Education/ Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
- Bilingual a plus.
Required Licenses/ Certification
- Possess and maintain a current RN license or compact RN license to practice in Texas.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current BLS certification

- Ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of a patient’s care.
- Ability to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures, philosophy and objectives of the hospital.
- Excellent interpersonal and technical skills.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on all units.
- Proficiency in recordkeeping and patient management systems (for example, EPIC BED BOARD).

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
