JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Medical Technical Assistant 1 obtains referrals to the University of Tennessee and outside specialists for the patients of the University of Tennessee Internal Medicine Center within the guidelines of the insurance company’s specifications and requirements.
Responsibilities
- Obtains and schedules patients appointments with specialists per the Internal Medicine physician’s request.
- Verifies and confirms the patient’s eligibility.
- Communicates referral to patient, insurance company, specialist, and Primary Care Physician at UT Internal Medicine Center.
- Make appointments for outpatient testing procedures with the breast center and radiology; completes prior authorizations.
- Updates and maintains accurate EMR records.
- Communicates changes in referral policies of various insurance companies to nursing and MD staff as they occur.
- Assists nurses by answering phone calls from physicians’ offices and patients.
- Assists the medical records department with obtaining referral and consult notes from the providers.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of relevant experience in outpatient medicine.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: CMA or RMA preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of different insurance companies.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and manage time.
- Ability to follow up with insurance carriers and adhere to the carrier’s policies, procedures, and protocols.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
