Position Summary
An Upward Bound Nurse focuses on overseeing student healthcare, ensuring the well-being of participants during the program’s duration. This can involve dispensing medications, running a residence hall health office, maintaining accurate medical records, and administering first aid.
Required Qualifications
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) certification required.
Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Experience working with adolescents or in an educational setting preferred.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Provide basic medical care, first aid, and emergency response to students.
- Maintain and administer student health records, medications, and medical supplies.
- Educate students on health, hygiene, nutrition, and wellness topics.
- Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate with external healthcare providers if needed.
- Monitor and support students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes).
- Ensure compliance with state health regulations and program policies.
- Assist in developing and implementing health-related safety protocols.
- Collaborate with program staff to promote student well-being.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Review all student medical records, including health forms, immunizations, allergies, and medication requirements prior to program start
- Administer prescribed medications in accordance with physician instructions and program protocols
- Provide basic medical care and first aid to students and staff as needed
- Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate care with local healthcare providers or emergency services
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with HIPAA and institutional policies
- Develop and implement health and safety procedures for the residential program
- Communicate with program staff and parents/guardians regarding student health concerns when appropriate
- Monitor student wellness and identify potential health risks throughout the program
- Support health screenings, wellness checks, and documentation requirements
- Ensure proper storage and handling of medications and medical supplies
